I was in the Coliseum (the other one)
September 6, 2006
This is an interesting leg of the journey. I’m not sure if we’re just tired or he even been fatigued by so much sightseeing even though everything has been so beautiful and amazing. Either way, we’re getting a little more lackadaisical in our scheduling, less zealous in out sightseeing, and more focused upon our resting.
While in Rome we have seen the Coliseum, Vatican City, the Pantheon, Fontana de Trevi, and the St Ignazio di Loyola cathedral. The Coliseum was strange, just to stand in a place where so much history has taken place, where such spectacular scenes unfolded, and so many lives were taken. It doesn’t hold the shock value or aesthetic pleasure as did the Eiffel Tower or David, but it was (I shaved my beard) awesome in another way, a more weighty historical way. I didn’t expect much from the St Ignazio di Loyola cathedral but it was really beautiful inside. So much more so than I expected. It also had a very different art from most of the cathedrals that we had seen. Some of the images were extended onto the moldings or even plastered out to give it a 3D effect. That was really and unexpected pleasure, to visit on a whim and be really blown away by it.
We ate at one place that I really like whose name I believe translates into “The Antique Beer Mug” but as lame as that name is the atmosphere and food was really good. It was an ivy covered building and the kind that as you’re walking up you’re hoping that it is the one you’re going to eat at…and it was. We also found (thanks to a guide book) the best gelato place in Rome. We’ve been there everyday but it is sooo good. The apple gelato was so flavorful. All the fruit flavors taste so tasty and fresh that it makes you want to shake your leg.
We leave for Venice tomorrow which could be an interesting place. Trying to get out to the island could be difficult and what exactly is there to do there since the whole place is flooded? I guess I’ll find out. After that we only have one more destination…Interlaken Switzerland. And then back to London for school…let’s not talk about it.
And today is my mom’s birthday. I wish I could be there to celebrate with you (and will be soon…ish) I love you.
